Dental Fillings Keep Smiles Safe for Years to Come

May 31, 2017 by drBraithwaite

Dental fillings keep smiles safe for years to come. If tooth decay has arisen to the point that your tooth enamel has a significant amount of dental erosion, a hole may have formed in a tooth, called a cavity. To stop infection and tooth loss, the cavity must be filled in with a dental filling, typically either a dental amalgam or tooth-colored composite. Listed below are some of the remarkable benefits and comparisons of the two main types of dental fillings:

– As dental amalgams contain mercury, if you would rather avoid it, opt for composite fillings instead.

– Dental amalgams are more effective for large cavities, whereas composite fillings are more effective for smaller and medium-sized cavities.

– Dental amalgams cover cavities with a distinctive metallic shine whereas tooth-colored fillings are more natural and tooth-colored in appearance.

– If a dental amalgam fails, it must be removed and replaced. If a composite filling fails, a new one can be reapplied with the original being removed.

Come in and see for yourself the magic of dental fillings.
