Dental Bonding
Do you have an oddly shaped tooth or unwanted gap between two adjacent teeth? Dental bonding may be the service you need to achieve the smile you want. You are welcome to visit our dentists, Drs. Steven and Randy, to learn if you would benefit from receiving dental bonding in American Fork, Utah. Contact Elite Dental at 801-763-7737 to learn more and schedule your appointment.
Tooth bonding is one of our cosmetic dental procedures that allows us to repair chipped, cracked or broken teeth. If you have discolored teeth, gaps you would like to fill between teeth, or lengthening of a specific tooth, this procedure may be right for you.
What Exactly is a Bond?
The bond we place on your tooth is made of a composite resin. We use this resin to fill in your broken tooth so that it looks like a normal one, making it impossible for anyone to notice that you have a bond. Since the color of the composite matches the color of our current teeth, it looks completely natural.
Although you may be mostly concerned with the appearance of your teeth and fixing the chips and cracks, this procedure is vital for your oral health as well. Bonding allows you to chew properly and prevents damage to your surrounding teeth. This simple procedure will prevent you from having to undergo much more extensive work.
Is Dental Bonding Right for You?
Our tooth bonding procedure is for those who take care of any minor chips and cracks as soon as they happen. If you have severe decay or missing teeth, we have other dental services better suited to treat you. If you are happy with the color and whiteness of your teeth, you can have this procedure done. If we check the damage of your tooth and deem it safe, you can have one of our whitening procedures done before we match the resin color to your teeth.
If we examine your teeth and determine that this procedure is right for you, there is little to no preparation that needs to be done beforehand. Before you come in for your bond, we only ask that you brush and floss your teeth as normal. Having clean teeth when you come in allows it to better match the color of the resin.
What Happens During Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a convenient, same day procedure. It normally doesn’t require the use of anesthesia. The only time we use this is for more severe breaks where the tooth is damaged near your nerve. Even then, the anesthesia we use simply numbs your mouth, so you can drive yourself to and from our office safely.
First, we select a composite resin color that matches the color of your existing teeth. Using a chart for comparison, we are able to match the color very closely. We then create a rough surface using dental tools so the bonding agent that is applied adheres properly to your tooth. Composite resin is added to the area and it is molded into the correct shape, concealing and repairing the damage. Finally, we use a UV light to dry and set the tooth. If any more shaping is necessary, this can still be done even after the UV light has been used.
Caring For Your Dental Bond
Although the composite resin we use is strong, you still need to take precautions to protect the work done on your teeth. You should avoid chewing on hard foods like ice and candy. These habits are not good for your natural teeth to begin with, so you should avoid them altogether. Although the resin is designed to match your tooth color, it is not resistant to staining over time. Things like coffee, red wine and cigarettes will discolor your bond. Although we have procedures that may help with discoloration, it is always best to avoid things that cause it in the first place.
Taking care of your teeth after a bonding procedure will allow your bond to last a very long time. Besides avoiding certain drinks and hard food, you should follow our self-care tips:
- Brush your teeth at least twice and day
- Floss your teeth everyday
- Avoid nail biting or using your teeth for anything other than food
- Make sure you come in for a dental cleaning every six months
- If you notice your tooth has been damaged or feels sharp following the procedure, come in right away
It is important to remember that although teeth are very strong, they are not completely indestructible. We use dental bonding as a proven method to fix cracks, chips and gaps between teeth. It is a painless procedure that is completed during a single appointment. If you have healthy teeth, but have damaged teeth due to an accident, you are a great candidate for dental bonding. You can come in and talk to one of our cosmetic dentists. We will help you decide the best, least invasive route to get your smile back.
